Ethiopian Airlines is flag carrying airline of Ethiopia and is wholly owned by the Ethiopian government. It’s widely considered to be one of the best airlines in Sub-Saharan Africa. Based at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport, they fly to more than eighty worldwide destinations and are constantly looking to expand their route network. Ethiopian Airlines has been a member of Star Alliance since 2011, and flies to more African destinations than anyone else. They have their own frequent flyer programme, Shebamiles, which is partnered with Lufthansa’s Miles & More.
How to Check In
You can check in the traditional way, at the airport counter. Desks open three hours before departure, and close one hour before. You can also check in online from 48 hours before departure up until two hours before departure on international flights. Check in for domestic flights begins 24 hours before departure.
Baggage Allowance and Fees
On flights to and from the US, Economy and Cloud Nine (business class) passengers can bring two bags free of charge. The weight limit for economy is 23kg, and 32kg for business. Members of the frequent flyer programme can bring extra baggage: ShebaMiles Gold, ShebaMiles Silver, and Star Gold members can bring an extra piece of baggage free of charge. Extra bags can be brought on board for a fee of $150-$200* (about £92.30-£123). Baggage allowance differs for other international and domestic routes. Seating – Leg Room, Choosing Seats
There’s a comfortable amount of legroom, with an economy seat pitch of 32” and a whopping 56” seat pitch in business class.
There’s no booking fee with Ethiopian Airlines.
Meals, Snacks, Drinks
Complementary meals, snacks and drinks are served in all classes. Economy passengers enjoy a three course meal along with their choice of drinks, while business class passengers can choose what they want to eat from the a-la-carte menu. They also benefit from a choice of white and red wines.
Ethiopian Airlines have a fairly good punctuality rating. Around 70% of their flights arrive and depart on time.
