Austin-Bergstrom Airport (AUS) is a busy place: more than 10 million passengers move through each year, and it sees over 150 daily departures to 44 destinations. It recently saw the addition of its first transatlantic route, direct to London Heathrow. Southwest is the biggest carrier here, but other big names such as Delta, American, and United also operate at huge volume, which is good news if you’re looking for cheap flights from Austin. All the major car rental companies operate here, and you also have options for public transit or private shuttles into the city center. Taxis have a $13.10 minimum with a $1 airport surcharge.

Stuff to do in Austin

The city motto is “Keep Austin Weird.” Expect the unexpected, and prepare to be totally charmed by the street art, funky shops, and laid-back anything-goes atmosphere. Hipsters and old-timers alike flock to the famous 6th Street strip, where taquerias, dive bars, and nightclubs abound. Rumor has it that Austin is home to more music venues per capita than anywhere else, and on Friday and Saturday nights, it’s easy to believe. Police restrict traffic, letting 6th Street become a pedestrian-only wonderland of entertainment. Live music pours from every door, the tequila is flowing, and a good time is guaranteed. Recover the next day with a spicy Tex-Mex brunch: order the Huevas Condesa at Condensa on 2nd street.

Austin is a great place to have a great night, but the days are just as good. Visit the outdoor Renaissance Market to shop for bargains and exquisite handicrafts. Spend an afternoon surrounded by masterpieces at the Blanton Museum of Art, which is the largest University art museum in the country. Take a boat tour to visit the world’s largest bat colony under the Congress Avenue Bridge. There’s so much to do here, so take your time and put together your own weird itinerary.

Advice for Tourists Visiting Austin

Austin is great year-round, but the summer heat (cresting 100 degrees on some days in July and August) is no joke. Spring and autumn are a lot more comfortable, with highs in the 70s. The University of Texas - Austin is a huge presence in the city. Graduation in May will see hotels flooded with proud families and UT home football games (Austin adores its Longhorns) will have a similar effect, so book early and save money.
