Cheap Flights from Des Moines - Find airline tickets from Des Moines with Skyscanner

The capital of Iowa is often called sleepy, and is sometimes even accused of being dull, but it is well-loved by locals, and visitors with a bit of patience are amply rewarded. It’s a good-looking city, with lovely parks and popular lakes, and it boasts some of the warmest-hearted people you’re ever likely to meet.

Flights from Des Moines

Des Moines International Airport (DSM) has just over a million enplanements. While the airport once had a reputation as expensive, cheap flights from Des Moines have become much more common. American Airlines, American Eagle, Delta, United Airlines, United Express, US Airways, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Allegiant Air all have routes to and from Des Moines, many with direct flights to big hub cities.

There are many choices for ground transportation between Des Moines and the airport, including a wide range of both public and private bus and shuttle services. Hotel shuttles, limos and taxis are also available, but you’re likely to find that a rental car is your most convenient option, since driving is the easiest way into and around the city.

What to Do in Des Moines

The State Capital is really something special, crowned with a shining 23 karat gold leaf dome and three copper domes which stand out brightly in the skyline. If you’re feeling energetic, try the tour inside, which includes the (optional!) 298 step climb to the very top, where you can peer out at the rest of the city. Inside, historic flags, including some from the civil war era, are on display.

Adventureland Amusement Park remains a popular spot for families, with shows, rides, games and the Adventure Bay water park. Des Moines is also the site of one of the country’s largest and most iconic state fairs. Agriculture is king, but food of all kinds, art, crafts, and much more are on display during the day, while the nights are devoted to foot-stomping music in the beer tents. Worth a visit for an undiluted dose of Americana.

Advice to Tourists Visiting Des Moines

Unless you’re aiming for the Fair in August, September is probably the best time to visit Des Moines. The hottest temperatures and the worst of the humidity are usually over, leaving you with blue skies and 75 degree days.
