Cheap Flights to Anchorage International

Anchorage International Airport

In Alaska’s south central corner lies Anchorage, a four-time noted All-American city where nearly half of the state’s population resides. Known as “the City of Lights and Flowers,” over 300,000 people call this beautiful northern municipality home. Although it lies within the United States, Anchorage is actually located closer to the North Pole than Stockholm, Helsinki, and Oslo.

Flights to Anchorage

Ted Stevens Anchorage International is the city’s main airport, and is one of the busiest in Alaska altogether. With a growing annual passenger base of 5,000,000+, the airport is a major hub for carriers conducting international flights. For years, it has been used a stopover point for airliners bound for Europe, among these being Air France, British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa. There are plans for the airport to be used a hub for flights to the Russian Far East in the coming years, though no agreements have been finalized as of yet.

Alaska Airlines, US Airways, United, Delta, Era Aviation, and Penair all offer direct flights to Anchorage, with American Airlines being the only carrier that provides nonstop trips for foreign visitors.

International flight traffic through Anchorage International has seen a decline since the 1990s but still serves as a central zone for cargo carriers. Cargo traffic is what Ted Stevens Anchorage International is best known for, as both FedEx and UPS use the airport for their Far East transportation operations.

What to Do in Anchorage

Alaska is famous for its nature and wildlife scene, and it goes without saying that a daytrip to Prince William Sound is in order. Prepare for gorgeous views of glaciers, waterfalls, and bays. Kayaking and sailing tours are abundant and an affordable way to take in the wonderful sights this city has to offer! The Chugach National Forest is a go-to place for hikers, as are the Tony Knowles Coastal and Flattop Hike trails.

Advice for the Tourists

Visiting Anchorage in the winter is only for the brave, as the temperatures rarely climb past the freezing point. The daily averages from June through August are quite accommodating, but err on the safe side by packing extra layers, especially for the colder nights.

Another great thing about traveling this time of year is the summer solstice, which provides 19 hours of sunlight each day. While the area outside the city is virtually uninhabitable, you will need to rent a car to get around. Do so early though, as reservations fill up fast and can get quite costly during peak season. The public PeopleMover bus system is a cheap transportation alternative.
