Sactown is the state’s oldest city, it got its start during the great California Gold Rush in 1849, and soon thereafter served as a primary commercial distribution point.

Sacramento International is the city’s primary airport, and is located 10 miles from downtown. The passenger base continues to hover near 9 million per year, making the airport one of the busiest in California. Given the strategic location, Southwest Airlines is the largest carrier for Sacramento International, comprising over half of its annual flight traffic.

United, Delta Air, and Alaska Airlines are the airports additional top airliners. Direct flights to Sacramento in the United States can also be booked through JetBlue, as well as American, Continental, Frontier, and Hawaiian Airlines. International tourists can fly nonstop via AirTran or Volaris.

What to Do in Sacramento
You don’t have to be a huge train lover to appreciate the California State Railroad Museum, a site that brings in 500,000 visitors each year. Many people consider the museum a crucial part of Sacramento’s history, and consider it the city’s top attraction.

The same goes for the Crocker Art Museum, which amazingly was the first of its kind in the United States. While in town, grab a bike and hit the trails at the American River Bicycle Trail, an integral part of the American Discover Trail.

With a conveniently organized street system, getting around in Sacramento is a no-brainer. The best (and cheapest) way to explore is on foot, though bicycling and a car rentals are recommended for those interested in lengthier excursions.

The food in this city is as diverse as its population. Enjoy great eating at Jack’s Urban Eats, Dos Coyotes Border Café, Crepeville, and Biba Ristorante Italiano. Nearby attractions outside of the city limits to check out are Reno and Lake Tahoe.
