Hotels in Alderney

Alderney is known for its beautiful scenery, friendly locals, and tragic history. The closest Channel Island to France, Alderney was abandoned by its locals during WWII and quickly taken over by the German army. Over the years the community has rebuilt itself, but Alderney still feels very rural: there are no cities on the island, just relaxing pastoral villages with traditional cosy pubs and plenty of friendly faces.

The accommodation on Alderney is as intimate and old fashioned as the rest of the island and mostly consists of charming guesthouses, family run B&BS, and boutique hotels. There are a few larger hotels, including some well-known chains, if you prefer a more corporate touch.

As a destination for a relaxed countryside break, you couldn’t do much better than Alderney. It’s a great place to enjoy the great outdoors at any time of year. There are Victorian fortifications and stone-age ruins to explore, golf courses to play, and secluded fishing spots to discover. There are beautiful beaches to lounge on in summer and fantastic walking trails to trek along in spring and autumn.

The island really comes to life in August, when the massive Alderney Week takes place. The lively carnival takes place over eight days at the start of the month and features lots of exciting, interesting, and sometimes kitsch events. The island’s population doubles during Alderney Week, so book your accommodation well in advance: and bear in mind that hotel prices are often higher while the festivities are taking place.
