Hotels in Manaus

Manaus is known as the Paris of the Tropics. It’s the capital of Amazonas and became a wealthy city during the rubber boom. At one point it was one of the most flamboyant cities in the world, with rubber barons constantly trying to outdo each other with shows of extravagance.

Today, Manaus is popular with ecotourists who want to explore the rainforest and see the meeting of the waters: where the black waters of the Rio Negro and the brown waters of the Rio Solimoes meet and flow side by side without mixing. It’s also a popular destination for business and shopping, as the city is a duty free zone.

Centro

Downtown Manaus is home to the main shopping district. Centro also has lots interesting historic buildings such as the Mercado Adolpho Lisboa, which was based on the Les Halles marketplace in Paris, and the decadent Teatro Amazonas which was built during the height of the rubber boom. Plenty of the hotels in Manaus are located in the city centre, making it easy to get out and see all of the sights.

Cidade Nova

The New Town of Manaus is the biggest neighbourhood in Latin America. Despite having 300,000 residents, the area isn’t built up. Most of the buildings are low rise, and there are lots of pretty parks. Although Cidade Nova doesn’t have the decadant old buildings of Centro, it certainly has plenty to offer visitors in terms of entertainment: the bairro is known for its restaurants and bars. During the day there are high end shops, and there are art fairs at the weekend.

Parque 10 de Novembro

The upmarket neighbourhood of Parque 10 de Novembro started life as a resort town at the end of the 1930s. Despite falling out of fashion later in the century, the neighbourhood has undergone improvements and is now one of the top cultural and entertainment areas in Manaus. Most of the nightlife is concentrated around a Praca do Eldorado, or as the locals know it, Praça do Caranguejo (Crab Plaza). The neighbourhood also has concert halls, restaurants, and a good selection of high end hotels.

Ponta Negra

Ponta Negra is one of the top tourist hotspots in Manaus and the glamorous riverfront plays host to a number of hotels and beach resorts. The neighbourhood is known for its nightlife, New Year firework display, and the beach which forms on the shore of Rio Negro during the dry season. It resembles any other beach town, with boardwalk bars and street vendors, the only difference being that the body of water is a river rather than a sea.
