Fly Jamaica Airways was founded in September of 2012 when it was certified by the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority. The airline was then cleared to operate in the United States in December of the same year. Fly Jamaica's inaugural flight from Kingston, Jamaica to New York City was made in February of 2013. In November 2017, the airline was given permission to begin direct flights to Cuba.

Fly Jamaica Airways was formed by the owner of Wings Aviation Ltd. in Guyana that owns and operates Cessna aircraft in the country. Three Jamaican shareholders were also part of the founding crew.

The carrier operates out of Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) in Kingston, Jamaica, which is located on the southeastern coast of the Caribbean island. KIN is the second busiest airport in the country and is the airline's central hub.

    Fly Jamaica Airways has two aircrafts in its fleet: a Boeing 757-200 and a Boeing 767-300ER. The Boeing 757-200 has a maximum capacity of 184 passengers and 12 crew members. The Boeing 767-300ER can hold 234 passengers and 12 crew members.

How to Check In, Seat Assignment, Leg Room, and Other Fees

Fly Jamaica Airways recommends checking in 3 hours before both domestic and international flights, with a check-in deadline of 2 hours prior to take-off. The airline recommends arriving 4 hours before flights to and from JFK in New York, although the deadline is still 2 hours. All passengers must be at the boarding gate no later than 45 minutes before the scheduled flight. Be aware that the airline may reassign your seat or cancel the reservation if you do not arrive on time.

Depending on the destination and aircraft, there could be 196-246 passengers on board. Passengers may select seats when booking a flight, and some premium seats may be assessed a small fee; however, the airline does reserve the right to change the seating arrangements as necessary. On the Boeing B757-200 model, leg room could vary between 31 and 36 inches between rows in economy class, whereas Business class offers 38 inches. Row 7 and row 26 are exit rows, offering the most leg room on the plane.

When booking a flight with Fly Jamaica, you should know that the airline does have certain reservations related fees. Passengers will be charged either $100 or $150 for flight date changes and $25 for any spelling correction on the reservation. There is also a fee of $100 for flight cancelations and an additional $40 for refund processing.

Baggage Allowance and Fees

Fly Jamaica Airways allows passengers to bring one complimentary carry-on bag, plus one personal item. Personal items may include a handbag, camera case, laptop, briefcase, or diaper bag. Customers traveling with small children can bring a car seat or collapsible stroller, as long as there is space available. Passengers may also check 2 bags for free with varying weight limits depending on seating class.

Economy class passengers may check 2 bags weighing no more than 50lbs each. The checked baggage must not exceed 62 linear inches. Bags weighing or measuring more than the acceptable limit will be subject to an excess baggage fee of $75. If a passenger would like to check more than 2 bags, there will be a fee of $150-$225 depending on the bag's size.

Business Class passengers may bring 2 bags weighing up to 70lbs each with a maximum size of 62 linear inches. Additional baggage and larger than acceptable bags will be subject to the same fees as economy class.

Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals

Fly Jamaica Airways does not provide entertainment or internet services on board any of its flights, but the airline does offer complimentary snacks and meals. The service is only available on certain flights and routes.

Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service Guidelines

Fly Jamaica Aireways welcomes infants ages 7 days to 2 years old to travel free of charge with a paying adult. The infant must sit on the adult's lap and are allowed one baggage item. Passengers who want to use a car seat for the infant must purchase a separate ticket, and adults traveling with more than one infant must purchase additional seats for those after the first child.

The airline considers children ages 5-17 who are flying alone to be unaccompanied minors. The airline offers a supervision service where a staff member will accompany the child from check-in at the airport through drop-off at the destination with an approved guardian. The service is mandatory for all children ages 5-14 and optional for those ages 15-17.

Unaccompanied minor service is $100 and must be arranged at least 48 hours before the scheduled flight. When booking a flight for an unaccompanied minor, be aware that a limited number per flight will be accepted and minors with medical conditions or disabilities are not permitted to fly alone.

Pet Policy

Fly Jamaica Airways does not allow pets to travel either in the cabin or as cargo on any flights. The only exception is for service animals that are required to assist a passenger on the flight or at the destination. Passengers must bring all necessary documents for the service animal to check-in, and the animal must remain at the floor of the person's passenger seat.

Dogs are not permitted into Jamaica from any country unless they were born and bred in the United Kingdom. Passengers traveling with dogs to and from international destinations must obtain an import permit from the Veterinary Services Division of the Ministry of Agriculture prior to arrival.
