How to Check In, Seat Assignment, and Leg Room
Spirit Airlines recommends arriving at the airport at least 2 hours prior to domestic departures and 3 hours prior to international flights. There are two ways to check-in for your flight with Spirit Airlines: online or in person. The quickest way to check in is online before you arrive at the airport. Checking in online is free when you print your boarding pass at home. Spirit Airlines online check-in begins 24 hours before the scheduled flight and closes one hour prior to departure.
With online check-in, passengers can purchase a seat assignment or additional last-minute baggage at a lower rate than when they arrive at the airport. Be aware that those who buy additional baggage within 24 hours of the scheduled flight will be charged the online check-in rate that varies by departure and destination location.
Travelers can opt to check in at the airport, but they will be subject to a fee of $10 per boarding pass. There are exceptions to the fee for passengers who are not able to check-in online for various reasons, including:
The airline prides itself on its no-frills business model that includes having the maximum number of seats in each aircraft. As a result, leg room is adequate, although there is an option to upgrade to a Big Front Seat. The seat pitch for a regular economy seat is 28", while a Big Front Seat is wider and offers a comfortable 36" of leg room.
Spirit Airlines offers free airline-assigned seating at check-in, but passengers may choose their own seats for a fee that varies by destination. Regular seat requests will be subject to a fee of $1 to $50, while the Big Front Seats cost $12 to $150. If not purchased in advance, Big Front Seat requests will be $25 to $175.
Baggage Allowance and Fees
Spirit Airlines allows passengers to bring one personal item on board as long as it fits under your seat. The maximum size of the personal item is 18"x14"x8" including handles and wheels. All other carry-on luggage and checked bags will be subject to a baggage fee.
Carry-on bags must not exceed 22"x18"x10" including handles and wheels. Checked baggage must be smaller than 62 linear inches and 40lbs. Larger or heavier bags will be subject to an oversized/overweight charge. The airline will not accept any bags that are larger than 80 linear inches or weigh more than 100lbs.
The baggage fee for all carry-on and checked bags vary based on departure and destination cities, as well as travel date. To save money, be sure to purchase baggage at the time of booking rather than at the airport. If you do check your bags at the airport, it must be purchased at least 45 minutes before domestic flights and 60 minutes before international flights. For specific restrictions and fees for your individual flight, visit the Spirit Airlines website.
Service On Board: In-flight Entertainment and Meals
Spirit Airlines believes passengers should only pay for the services they want, so the carrier does not offer entertainment or complimentary snacks and beverages. With a debit or credit card, you can buy items like chips, muffins, candy, soda, or liquor. Prices for drinks and snacks can range from $1 to $15, but you can save even more when you purchase a bundle. If you'd like something to read during your flight, you can buy a magazine or bring your own reading material - as long as it fits in your personal bag.
Child Fares/Fees, Minor Service Guidelines
The airline allows infants ages 7 days to 23 months to sit on a guardian's lap free of charge, although guests may opt to purchase a seat for the infant. Children older than 2 must occupy a seat and will be charged for a ticket.
Spirit also allows children aged 5-14 years to travel alone on domestic flights only for a fee of $100 per child. Unaccompanied minors will be offered a snack and drink on board and escorted off the plane by a flight attendant. The attendant will release the minor to the person designated for pick-up.
The Unaccompanied Minor service must be arranged prior to arriving at the airport, and all minors must check in at the gate at least 60 minutes prior to departure. The person dropping the child off must escort the minor to the gate and remain at the airport for 15 minutes after the flight takes off.
Spirit Airlines allows small domesticated pets on board all domestic flights, but the container and pet must fit under the passenger's seat. The airline welcomes dogs, cats, and small household birds. The maximum size of the container is 18"x14"x9" and 40lbs, and the pet must be able to stand up and turn around in the container. There is a fee of $110 per pet container each way, and only one container per guest is allowed.
