Volaris Airlines Cheap Flights

Volaris is Mexico’s largest low cost carrier airline.  Its first flight took wing in 2006, under the name of Vuela Airlines; since then it has grown to become Mexico’s second largest airline.  It codeshares with Southwest Airlines and now owns the subsidiary Volaris Costa Rica.

For a fee, Volaris offers an on-time performance guarantee.  If you purchase this service they will send you – depending on the currency in which you purchased the service – either $100 or 1000 MXN if your flight arrives more than 30 minutes late at its destination.  This gives them plenty of incentive to be punctual.

  • Mexico City International Airport (MEX). This airport is a hub for Volaris, is situated about 3 miles east of downtown Mexico City, and is the busiest airport for both Mexico and Latin America.  It has two terminals, separated by runways.  It is high (7316 feet), tends to be hot, and is operating at capacity in a congested area.  Therefore, Mexico City is planning a new one about 10 miles.
  • Tijuana International Airport (TIJ). This airport, also known as General Abelardo L. Rodriguez International Airport, is a hub for Volaris. It is just south of the US-Mexico border between Tijuana and San Diego and can even be reached directly from the United States by the Cross Border Xpress terminal and bridge.  The main facility is in Mexico but there is a terminal in the US.  The terminal in Mexico is also known as Terminal 1 while the terminal in the US is known as both Terminal 2 and CBX.  Additional expansion is planned.
  • Cancún International Airport (CUN). The airport for this focus city of Volaris is the second-busiest in Mexico.
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The airport for this focus city of Volaris is the busiest in California and has 9 terminals.  Volaris flights check in at Terminal 2 but will probably fly in and out of the Tom Bradley International Terminal, also known as Terminal B or TBIT.

Volaris: Loyalty Programs, Discounts and Promotions

V.Club is the name of the Volaris loyalty program.  It is not earned via miles but through a membership fee.  The annual fee is 549 MXN, about $28 (USD).

Membership in the entitles you to Volaris’ lowest (blue) fares on all flights, a savings of up to 40% on fares.

You’ll be one of the first to learn about promotions.

Promotion codes are also sometimes available at the Volaris website for discounts of up to 50%.

Volaris: Check In, Seat Assignment, Leg Room and Other Fees

You can check in on the web or at kiosks or counters in airports.

Seat pitch is generally between 30 and 32 inches; seat width is 18 inches.

Volaris understands that different passengers have different priorities and needs when traveling.  Consider booking one of the following options:

More Baggage

  • An additional 22 extra pounds in your cabin bag
  • A checked bag weighing up to 55 pounds
  • A checked piece of sports equipment (maximum weight of 55 pounds, 98 total inches) OR a musical instrument (if checked, maximum weight of 55 pounds and total 62 inches; if in cabin, maximum weight of 22 pounds and total 51 inches)

More Flexibility

  • You can make one flight change that costs no more than the difference in the price of the fare
  • One hop on/hop off service – this means you can take the flight directly before or directly after at no additional charge – but seats must be available and you should make this change from 24 hours to 4 hours before the original departure time of your flight

More Speed

  • Priority boarding
  • Business fast pass (you can use the fast lane in some USA and Costa Rica airports)
  • Choose any seat you like with the exception of first row seats and seats in emergency exits

Other options

  • Empty seats. An empty seat can sometimes be reserved to give you and perhaps a traveling partner more space by reserving the seat between you.  The charge varies by flight and you must pay in advance.  Sometimes the seat must be given to another passenger; if this happens, you will be refunded the full amount of what you paid for the empty seat.
  • On time performance. You can purchase an on-time performance guarantee.  If your Volaris flight arrives more than 30 minutes late, you will be refunded either $100 (USD) or 1000 (MXN), depending on the currency of the original purchase.

Volaris Child Fares/Fees and Unaccompanied Minor Service

Traveling with infants

  • A passenger is considered an infant up to the second birthday. If the passenger will be more than two years on the return journey, that passenger will require an adult ticket for the return.
  • An infant must be older than seven days to travel on Volaris.
  • An infant must be held on the lap of an adult passenger for the flight. If you wish for the child to travel in a baby seat, you must buy an additional adult ticket.
  • An adult may travel with two infants but only one may be on the adult’s lap; a second ticket must be purchased for the second infant.
  • The infant baggage service charge covers transportation of a stroller, a baby carrier and a diaper bag.
  • An adult with a lap infant may not sit in an emergency row or a window seat.

Unaccompanied Minor Service: “Volaris is with you”

  • Passengers between the ages of 5 and 11 may only travel alone if the “Volaris is with you” service is purchased.
  • This service is available but optional for passengers between the ages of 12 and 17.
  • Minors between 2 and 4 may not travel as unaccompanied minors unless they are traveling with a family member between the ages of 12 and 17 who assumes responsibility (but the unaccompanied minor service must be purchased for both).
  • Volaris cannot accept children requiring medical treatment as unaccompanied minors.
  • Minors less than 15 may not sit in emergency exit rows.
  • If the journey includes a connecting flight, the time between flights must be at least 2 hours but less than 4 hours.

Volaris Airlines Pet Policy

Volaris can fly most dogs or cats, either with you in the cabin or as checked luggage, providing they have the appropriate papers (generally vaccination certificate, deworming certificate and health certificate, but this depends on destination), are at least four months old, not sick or pregnant, and are appropriately kenneled.  Booking for pets is cheapest if you do it when you buy your own tickets, or in the Add Services, via a call center or at an airport counter.  You must always check in at a counter, so that an agent can verify your paperwork and inspect the transportation container.

Tips: introduce your animal to the kennel well before travel to avoid trauma; include a toy; and make sure the container is properly labeled.

Pets in the Cabin

  • The pet plus its container must weigh 22 pounds (10 kg) or less.
  • The container must be not more than 17.5 x 12 x 7.5 inches, where 7.5 inches is the container’s height. It must fit underneath the seat before you.
  • Your pet must be able to stand comfortably.
  • Dogs can be in either soft or rigid containers; cats must be in rigid containers.
  • If you are traveling with a dog, you must be in a window seat but not in an emergency exit row.
  • If you are traveling with a cat, you must be in a window seat in the last row of the plane (to minimize problems of passengers with allergies)

 Pets in Checked Luggage

  • Volaris calls this service “Pet in Belly.”
  • The pet plus its container must weigh 100 pounds or less.
  • Containers must be rigid, clean, waterproof, ventilated on four sides, with handles for secure lifting.
  • The pet must be able to move comfortably in the container.
  • Containers with dimensions greater than 62 inches (length + width + height) will be subject to an oversize fee (in addition to the cost of the pet’s flight).
  • Snub-nosed animals may not be checked, as they may have trouble breathing. For cats, this means Burmese, Persian, Himalayan and exotic shorthair. For dogs, there are many breeds, but some examples include Boston terriers, boxers, bulldogs, Pekingese, pit bulls and all pugs.
