Rental companies may charge extra for drivers under 25, normally payable when you pick up your car. Age restrictions may apply in certain locations. Check the rental company's website before making your reservation.

Hanoi Car Rentals

Renting a car in Hanoi is legally complicated. No rental car agency in Hanoi will rent cars for self driving, which means all car hires in Vietnam must include a driver. While there are some exceptions and loopholes, most notably, buying an international driving permit, combined with local insurance, the stringent laws against foreigners driving in Hanoi probably exist for good reason.

The driving rules for road travel in Hanoi are challenging to foreign visitors to understand. Combine chaotic cars interacting with motorcyclists dodging menacing potholes, and it suddenly seems like a good idea to hire that car with a driver.

Renting a Car in Hanoi

Skyscanner offers a handy comparison search tool to find the best budget car rental agencies in Hanoi. Simply enter the travel dates, choose the desired options, and select a vehicle. The price quoted for the car rental in Hanoi includes the driver. Think of it as hiring a private guide for a custom designed tour of Hanoi.

Be sure to meet the driver before beginning the journey; they may not speak English. Drivers usually pay for their own food and accommodation for the duration of the journey, while the vehicle renter pays for gas and tips. Be sure to confirm the fine points with the car rental company.

Driving to Attractions in Hanoi

Drive 41 minutes from Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport to reach Hanoi's city center. For serene settings outside of the hustle and bustle, drive to Hanoi's West Lake and visit the 6th-century island temple Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi. Take Thanh Niên to reach the temple and continue down this road south to the Hanoi Botanical Gardens. Leave the car with the driver and take a leisurely stroll through history. Visit the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh's Tomb, and the One Pillar Pagoda.

If one island temple isn't enough, visit Ngoc Son Temple, on a small island in the northern part of Hoan Kiem Lake. Cross a scarlet-painted, wooden bridge to reach the old temple. Stroll through the Old Quarter of Hanoi for a bit of Vietnamese/Chinese/French colonial culture clash. For incredible views of sprawling Hanoi, climb to the 65th floor of the Lotte Center Observation Deck, located south of West Lake.

Driving to Attractions Outside of Hanoi

The popular Ha Long Bay sports rocks and mountains jutting up from the water. Halong Bay is a four-hour drive east of Hanoi (with toll roads along the way). It is the perfect spot for an overnight stay and some serious boating action. Drive 60 miles directly south of Hanoi for a day trip to Hoa Lu. This ancient capital of Vietnam boasts many Buddhist temples, caves, and 10th-century archways from early city fortifications.

While in the Ninh Binh area of Vienam, drive another 12 miles to experience the gorgeous natural landscape of Tam Coc. Ditch the car, rent a boat, and float down a lazy river through bright green fields and rice paddies to another century.

Hanoi has a rich culture waiting to be explored. Let Skyscanner help with finding the best low-price car rentals in Hanoi.
