Nassau Car Rentals

Nassau is the bustling capital of The Bahamas. This is the commercial hub for The Bahamas and plenty of business travelers visit its shores. For many tourists and business travelers, renting a car is the most convenient way to get around in Nassau.

Car Rental in Nassau

Lynden Pindling International Airport is the major airport for the Bahamas. Several U.S. car rental companies operate at the airport including Avis, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty, and Hertz. All offer a range of vehicles from easy-to-handle compact cars to large sedans and SUVs for bigger groups. Even limousines are available for those wanting to travel in style. To find affordable Nassau car rental, look on Skyscanner.

Getting to and From the Airport

The airport lies 10 miles west of Downtown Nassau. When driving from the airport, Downtown Nassau is a 25-minute drive along John F. Kennedy Drive. Note that the airport is located west of Nassau and most gas stations are towards the island's east side. When returning a rented car, make sure to fill up at a gas station on the way to the airport.

Driving Around Nassau

Nassau's layout is simple and getting around is easy. Bay Street runs parallel to the shore and is the main shopping street. On the hill behind Bay Street is the business district, where most of the government buildings and company headquarters are found. The residential district called Over-the-Hill starts on the other side.

Because The Bahamas was once a British colony, the area still follows British protocol on the roads. Cars drive on the left side of the road; there are UK-style road signs and even the occasional roundabout. Be alert on the roads as drivers can sometimes be reckless. A rented scooter is an ideal way to zip around the island.

What to Do in Nassau

One of the first things visitors do is simply walk around town. It's a visual feast of colonial architecture, pastel-colored buildings like the pink Parliament Building, and old forts. Take a short stroll to Fort Fincastle and climb the 66 steps known as the Queen's Staircase. Those coming off the cruise ships tend to head straight to Bay Street for plenty of duty-free shopping.

Nassau was a pirate's haven until 1718. The legendary pirate, Blackbeard, lived on the island. Evidence of its pirate past is dotted throughout the area. The Pirate Museum is fun for kids. It features replicas of a pirate town, a pirate ship, and a pirate battle.

A visit to Nassau is not complete without hopping over to Paradise Island. Two bridges connect Nassau to the island. From Downtown Nassau, it's a 10-minute drive over the bridge. A $2 toll fee applies. The 685-acre island is a tourist mecca and visitors flock to the area in peak season. It's packed with resorts, hotels, restaurants, shops, nightlife, a golf course, an aquarium and a casino. The biggest drawcard is the famous Atlantis Resort. To find a hotel in Nassau on Skyscanner, it's best to book early.

The Caribbean's white sandy beaches and brilliant blue waters will always beckon vacationers. There really is no bad time to visit Nassau. The subtropical climate means the weather is warm and sunny most of the year and winters are mild. It's the perfect all-year round vacation destination.
