East Midlands Airport does most of its business in traffic to resort destinations throughout Europe. Most passengers traveling out of this airport are headed to Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Tenerife. Hundreds of thousands of passengers each year also fly to Lanzarote, Ibiza, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria from here. Traffic is heaviest during the warmer months of April to September, and many of the airlines based here add seasonal service during those months.
In addition to the vacation traffic, East Midlands sees a great deal of traffic to Ireland, with Dublin and Belfast among its most heavily traveled routes. There is also significant traffic to Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Those who wish to take the rail to East Midlands Airport have two station options: Long Eaton, or East Midlands Parkway. As the name indicates, East Midlands Parkway is closer to the airport; however, there is no further public transit connection from there. If you disembark from the train at East Midlands Parkway you will have to either take the Elite Cars private shuttle or call for a taxi to cover the remaining four miles. Though Long Eaton is farther away, several Skyline local buses that also stop at the airport are available directly from that station. These buses are available 24 hours a day, though the frequency of departure changes from every 20 minutes to once per hour overnight.
If you're driving to East Midlands you can take the M1 or A42 to Ashby Road for quick and easy access. Be aware that the airport has a mandatory £2 charge just to drop passengers off, however, and will charge an additional £1 for every minute over 10 minutes that you stay on airport grounds.
Free WiFi is available at East Midlands, but the formal policy is that it is restricted to 60 minutes. However, you may be able to log out and log back in for multiple sessions if needed.
Other available facilities include a multi-faith prayer and meditation room and a currency exchange. The Escape Lounge is also available for a daily fee and offers complimentary drinks and a buffet. The lounge also has charging stations and its own unlimited free WiFi network, and is open from 4 AM to 7:30 PM most days.
If you have some time to kill at the airport, check out the on-site Aeropark museum. It features a wide variety of preserved historic aircraft as well as a prime viewing area for take-offs and departures.
