Helena Regional Airport
Before the airport was even built, Helena was making news in the new field of aeronautics. The Montana state fair was held in Helena, and in 1911 the fair and some local businesses put together a prize purse of $10,000 for the first person to fly over the Continental Divide. The winner was Cromwell Dixon, a 19-year-old aviator. The governor of Montana declared him, "The World's Greatest Aviator." Unfortunately, he was killed two days later when performing in an air show. Many historic and important events occurred at the airport in Helena, including a visit from Charles Lindbergh. Today the airport serves travelers from all over the world as they fly out of Helena to their destinations.
