Bulgaria's Varna Airport is served by a wide variety of European and local airlines. The airport sees heavy regular traffic as tourism to the area is very popular, especially during the peak summer season of June to August. If you're flying to a destination in Bulgaria or elsewhere in Europe, however, the good news is that it's a great place to look for a deal during the tourism seasons due to the competition between many different airlines.
Most of the airlines flying out of Varna are seasonal, so you'll find the widest range of destinations and deals available during the warm spring and summer months. During this time you can catch flights to pretty much any major city in Europe as well as destinations in Russia like Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Several airlines also fly to Iran and Israel such as Bul Air, Bulgarian Air Charter, Israir Airlines, Mahan Airlines and Qeshm Airlines.
During the winter off-season, options are more limited, but there are still some airlines providing regular service out of Varna. Among the year-round carriers are Austrian Airlines (Vienna), Bulgaria Air (Burgas and Sofia), S7 Airlines (Moscow), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) and Wizz Air (a handful of major cities throughout Europe as well as Tel Aviv). As of late October 2017, Ryanair will be operating out of Varna with a year-round regular flight to Brussels.
The most popular destinations from Varna are Moscow, London, Dusseldorf, Sofia and Istanbul.
Varna Airport is just northwest of the city of Varna. From Varna, simply follow I-2 northwest to route A2, which takes you straight to the airport. From the north you can also follow route 29 south to the airport exit.
A bus is available that takes you directly to Terminal 2. Bus #409 stops at various points throughout Varna including a few of the major resorts and the city center. The bus runs every fifteen minutes during the day, and can take 15 to 50 minutes to get to the airport depending on where you board.
Of course, there are also various taxi options in the city. And if you've rented a car while visiting Varna, the airport has drop-off locations for many major chains including Hertz, Avis and Budget.
All flights from Varna will depart from either Terminal 2 or 3. Terminal 1, the airport's original terminal, is now closed with the exception of the VIP area. Passengers with elite tier status in some airline programs get complimentary access, while others can book in advance for a fee. The lounge offers comfortable seating, free beverages, free sandwiches and snacks, internet access, television and various priority boarding services.
There are a small amount of restaurants at the airport: a coffee stand, a cafe, McDonalds, a pizza place and a bar. There are also a few small shops that sell gifts, snacks, drinks and newspapers.
Other airport amenities include a medical center, free WiFi in Terminal 2, and currency exchange.
