Cheap Flights to Netherlands Antilles

The Netherlands Antilles consist of six islands spread across the southern and eastern Caribbean. The two groups are the SSS Islands, which lie to the east of Puerto Rico, and the ABC Islands north of Surinam. SSS stands for Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustasius while ABC stands for Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. The islands are famous for the liqueur Blue Curacao, which is distilled from the dried peels of the laraha fruit.

Flights to Netherlands Antilles

When you fly to the Netherlands Antilles, you have a choice of three international airports. They are Flamingo International Airport (BON), Hato International Airport (CUR), and Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM). There are also two other airports that serve island-hopping aircraft: Franklin Delano Roosevelt Airport (EUX) and Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport (SAB). Planes need a special permit to land at the latter.

The terminals at the three international airports all have up-to-date amenities. These include duty-free shops, specialty gift shops, cafes, and lounges for the passengers who fly to the Netherlands Antilles. Hiring taxis for one ride costs about $20. If you rent one for an hour, the cost is about $50.

Attractions in Netherlands Antilles

Both sets of islands have popular attractions. On Bonaire, for instance, you can visit the Bonaire National Marine Park. The waters in and around this park are clear enough to provide visibility to a depth of 150 feet. It's been listed as one of the top five diving destinations on the planet. On Curacao, you can hop in a dinghy and browse through the floating market. It features not only local goods, but also goods from Venezuela, which is only 40 miles away.

Juancho E. Yrausquin airport, with its famous tiny runway, sits upon Saba Island. If you hike, appreciate nature, or both, fly to this island on a Beechcraft or Twin Otter and explore all of its 5 square miles. There are no "chains" or business franchises on the island. Instead, there are only cozy and familial restaurants and pubs that allow you to try something truly different.

If you prefer a bustling nightlife, Willemstad will provide it for you. It is the capital of the Netherlands Antilles and sits on Curacao. UNESCO has even designated the entire city as a World Heritage Site. You can sample the foods and goods from more than 50 distinct cultures, some of which date back more than 400 years.

Both sets of islands are tropical, and the average highs throughout the year approach 90 degrees Fahrenheit with lows that rarely drop past 77 degrees. Baseball is the most popular sport on the islands, and you can catch a game at many stadiums, including Don Elias Mansur Ballpark in Aruba and Kralendijk Municipal Stadium in Bonaire. The country is responsible for having sent many players, such as five-time All-Star Andruw Jones, to the majors.
