Austin-Bergstrom is the city’s principal international airport. It is located approximately 5 miles from the downtown core, and features three helipads along with two runways. Since its inception in 1999, the airport has seen incredible growth. A record number of passengers flew through its gates in 2013, clearing for the first time ever the 10,000,000 mark!
This surge in traffic can be partly attributed to the addition of Aeromar and Allegiant Air as new carriers, as well as the fact that Austin-Bergstrom offers nonstop flights to 44 domestic and international destinations. From within the United States, direct flights to Austin can be reserved through American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Delta, United, US Airways, JetBlue, and Virgin America. AirTran is the only international carrier that provides one-way routes to the city.
What to Do in Austin
Austin is home to one of the few indoor skydiving facilities in the country. iFLY puts customers above a floating cushion of air and lets them experience the fun of floating for at least an hour. This attraction is safe and enjoyable for children and adults!
Zach Theatre one of the city’s most famous theaters, so if you are looking to watch a live performance, this is the place to be. Outdoor enthusiasts can spend the day on Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail, or lounge next to (or in) Barton Springs Pool!
Advice for Tourists Visiting Austin
Summers in Austin can get quite hot, with daily temperatures rarely dropping below 90 degrees. As such, dress accordingly and bring an extra bottle of water for your daytrips! This geographically dispersed metropolis is a major challenge for tourists on foot, so take the more efficient Capital Metro bus system instead or rent a car. Please note that the city takes its parking laws very seriously; avoid getting a ticket by staying in municipal parking garages.
