Cheap Flights to Auvergne

The French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (commonly shortened to Auvergne) is primarily served by Clermont-Ferrand Airport in the city of the same name. It is also the only major commercial airport in the area. The only regional alternative is the Aurillac - Tronquieres Airport, which is located near the commune of Aurillac and has only a limited amount of service exclusively with budget carrier Société HOP! (mostly limited to domestic flights to and from Orly Airport in Paris).

Auvergne High and Low Seasons

Auvergne's tourist seasons aren't much different than those of France and Western Europe as a whole. Summer sees the largest crowds, though traffic to Vichy can begin to peak in May rather than June. Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with decent weather and better pricing, while winter brings snow and cold but also the best possible hotel and airfare deals.

Major annual events in the region include the SIRHA International Trade Show in January, the International Short Film Festival in February, the Venetian Carnival in March, the Nuits Sonores electronic music festival in May, the Festival of Cinema Animation in June, a leg of the Tour de France in mid-July, the Festival Berlioz in August and the Light Festival in early December.

Auvergne Airport Tips

Clermont-Ferrand Airport is a small airport that primarily sees passengers going to and from Paris on Air France. Food is limited to one on-site restaurant and a snack shop. Free WiFi is available as well as an ATM, automated photo machine and mail drop.

Aurillac - Tronquieres Airport is likewise quite small and has very limited amenities, although there is a restaurant on site.

Transportation from Auvergne's Airports

The only public transportation available from Clermont-Ferrand Airport is the T2C 20 bus, which takes a little over half an hour to get to the city center of Clermont-Ferrand. A taxi stand is also available, as well as car rental from Hertz and Enterprise.

There is presently no public transportation to or from Aurillac - Tronquieres Airport, but private shuttles and buses are available. Car rental is available at the airport from Avis and Europcar. Additionally, Hertz and Rent A Car have locations close to the airport and may be able to provide shuttle service to their offices.

Things to do in Auvergne

Auvergne is a wonderful place to visit for those who love French and medieval European history. Many ancient churches of the region are open to the public to view, headlined by the Le Puy en Velay cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also more than a dozen castles to explore, with the largest number found in Haute Loire and Puy de Dome.

The region is also excellent for those who love the outdoors. The main attraction are the area volcanoes and the Vulcania theme park near Clermont-Ferrand. This area is also the central hub for France's sprawling system of national long-distance hiking trails. Other options include hot air balloon rides, kayaking, mountain biking, skiing and visits to a number of regional lakes that are big enough for sailing.
