If you’re flying into Chicago, then you’ll probably land at O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The smaller Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) is also in the city. Upon reaching O’Hare International Airport (ORD), you can get to downtown Chicago by taking the Blue Line train, which operates 24 hours a day. Many of the larger hotels provide shuttle service, or you can hop onto a regional bus. Rental cars are available at the airport as are taxis. The airport is big, but it is easy to navigate. O’Hare features five terminals with restaurants, shops and facilities for yoga practices and religious services. 

From O’Hare (ORD), you can reach downtown Chicago in less than 30 minutes, but don’t overlook sites near the airport. Before heading into the bustling downtown area, consider taking a few hours to reconnect with nature by visiting Schiller Woods. The site is just 5 miles to the east of the airport. While there, stroll down one of the hiking trails or relax on the grass. Keep your camera phone at the ready to snap pictures of deer, geese and ducks. If you prefer indoor activities, stop by the Rosemont Theatre. The entertainment venue is 10 minutes from O’Hare and presents acclaimed stage productions. 

Carriers to Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) include Delta, Porter Airlines and Southwest Airlines. Amenities include a currency exchange, several restaurants and duty free shopping. Downtown Chicago is a 10-mile taxi ride away and the journey will cost around $30. The Chicago Transit Authority Orange Line will take you downtown for $2.25 with the journey taking around 30 minutes. 

Chicago Attractions and Things to Do

There are plenty of things to do in Chicago as the city contains the renowned Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum and Willis Tower. Millennium Park is another intriguing Chicago site, and it is located just north of the Art Institute of Chicago. At the park, you’ll have the chance to view progressive works of art, fascinating architecture and meticulously cultivated landscaping. Make plans to see renowned landmarks like the Crown Fountain and Cloud Gate. If your trip to Chicago is for business, then keep in mind that many of the city’s attractions close early, so if you can, extend your trip to experience Chicago's culture and entertainment.

Hints and Tips for Exploring Chicago

Chicago hosts a number of major sports teams. Depending on the time of year that you’re visiting, consider getting tickets for a sporting event. If you’re in the city during the spring or summer, you may be able to watch the Chicago Cubs play at Wrigley Fields. During the fall and winter, football season arrives, so plan to support the Chicago Bears. Tickets can be hard to come by. You will need to plan ahead if you want to see a game. 

The best time to visit the Windy City is from April through May. September and October are also good weather months in Chicago. Outdoor temperatures are warm while travel costs tend to be reasonable. 

From high-end dining establishments to world famous street fare, Chicago’s food scene is perse. Be sure to try local staples like Chicago-style pizza and hotdogs as well as international imports like Mexican and French food. Hotdogs will run you about $8 for two while pizza ranges from $11 to $30 a pie. 

With its abundance of cultural attractions, unforgettable landmarks and tasty cuisine, Chicago is a place that knows how to keep the locals and its visitors busy.
