Cheap Flights to Cancun
The Mexican resort city of Cancun sits almost at the very tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. Its modern airport, Cancun International Airport (CUN), allows visitors to reach the popular vacation spot from just about any corner of the world, and travelers flock to Cancun to enjoy white sand beaches and translucent blue seas by day and a trendy party atmosphere by night. There are also family-oriented activities available, such as swimming with dolphins. Dolphinaris Cancun nature park is just about 4 miles from the airport.
Cancun Travel GuideFly to Cancun International Airport (CUN)
The airport has two terminals that handle commercial airline flights to Cancun and one terminal for private jets and freight. A courtesy shuttle facilitates travel between the various terminals. The airport is served by many major carriers, including Delta, United, American, Alaska, JetBlue, Southwest and Virgin America. Travelers have access to various amenities inside the airport; there are restaurants, boutiques, duty-free shops, a drugstore, a convenience store, several ATMs and even a store specializing in gifts for pets.
Neither complimentary hotel shuttles nor regular taxis are permitted to pick up passengers at the airport, so unless visitors wish to rent a car, they must rely on one of the authorized methods of transportation to reach their accommodations. Shared or private transfers in small buses, vans or limousines can be reserved online prior to arrival. Their cost is anywhere from $30 to $80 depending on the number of passengers and the particular hotel destination.
Prices are similar for the exclusive taxis found at the airport taxi stands. The least expensive option, with a cost of $4 per person, is an ADO bus. However, these buses only travel to a terminal in downtown Cancun, requiring travelers to hail a cab to get from there to their hotels. The advantage is that street cabs are usually more economical.
Attractions and Things to Do on the Yucatan Peninsula
The biggest lures in Cancun are the beaches and the activities that surround them. Snorkeling, boating, scuba diving and water sports as well as sunbathing and nightclub-hopping are the most popular pursuits. Although lodging options are available in downtown Cancun, the vast majority of travelers choose to stay in the famed hotel zone. This is a narrow strip of land shaped like a number seven that is highly developed because it offers 17 miles of spectacular beaches.
Both all-inclusive mega resorts and smaller boutique hotels can be found here. The city is also considered the gateway to the region's rich Mayan culture. Authentic Mayan cuisine can be found in smaller eating establishments in the city center, and vacationers can see Mayan ruins at El Rey and Yamil Lu'um in the heart of the hotel zone.
Travel Tips for Your Cancun Vacation
Cancun is blessed with warm weather all year, and temperatures average about 83 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Summer is also when the region experiences the most rainfall. Dining options are plentiful and varied but often not inexpensive. A gourmet meal for two can easily top $60. In fact, Cancun is the site of the annual Wine and Food Festival, which organizes dinners and events in different hotels in the city and is attended by celebrated chefs from all over the world.
