About Rome

Cheap Flights to Rome

Once influential enough to govern much of the world, Rome today is still known as the Eternal City for its mix of ancient marble buildings, Renaissance wonders and modern attractions. From the graceful Spanish Steps to the impressive Vittorio Emanuele monument, the cobbled streets of Rome lead the traveler on an incredible journey through 2,000 years of history, art and culture. From delicious food to world-famous sights, Rome continues to hold the fascination of travelers from across the globe.

Flights to Rome

Rome has two airports servicing flights to Rome, Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) and Ciampino International Airport (CIA). Both are about a half an hour from the center of Rome by bus and slightly less by taxi. As befits its status as a major hub for air travel throughout Italy, Fiumicino caters to travelers with a range of shopping, restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Ciampino is slightly closer to Rome and, while not a major hub, does provide duty-free shopping, snack bars and restaurants. There are many hotels located near the airport, but travelers may enjoy the wide variety of accommodations throughout this sprawling metropolis.

Rome Attractions

Rome has many districts that make up its heart, most of which have their own character and boast an incredible list of sights. The famous Colosseum, Forum, Trevi Fountain and Pantheon are all easily seen in a day. Vatican City is technically a separate country but has an almost seamless transition from the rest of Rome. Here lie wonders like the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica, some of the only areas of Vatican City open to visitors. The famous Sistine Chapel is recommended for all travelers, and visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of Rome when exploring St. Peter's dome.

The imposing Castel Sant Angelo is a highlight of wandering along the historic Tiber River, and it's not far by foot to the impressive Piazza Navona with its Bernini fountain, lovely church and numerous shops. Farther from the center, the mysterious catacombs beckon history buffs with their winding underground necropolises.

Hints and Tips for Visiting Rome

Rome's balmy Mediterranean climate dips into the 50s during the day in winter, and summer temperatures hover in the high 80s. Although most days are filled with sunshine, the occasional rainy day or even a surprise snowfall can occur.

In a culture this dedicated to delicious food, Rome is a foodie's paradise with regional cooking from around Italy available to try. Simple handmade pasta dishes and a bottle of wine from the nearby Campania region will run about $50 for two people. Visitors should also try the famous gelato in a range of imaginative flavors and sample an authentic cappuccino or espresso.

Rome holds the Estate Romana Festival during the summer months, and it's an excellent way for travelers to enjoy jazz, classical music or rock and roll. The Opera at the Baths of Caracalla is a rare treat, allowing visitors to enjoy Italian opera amid the ancient ruins on warm evenings in summer.
