Berat, located in south-central Albania, is considered to be one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. In 2008, the old town (Mangalem district), was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today Berat is one of the most popular destinations in Albania for travelers. A highlight is the castle and old town at the top of the hill above town.

This is one of the most beautiful towns in Albania and a must to visit. Known as the "town of a thousand windows" one can see why, as the impressive white Ottoman houses climb the hill-side. Little bridges cross a river and provide wonderful views looking across. Make sure to visit "Kala" the citadel up atop the town which provides commanding views of the area. Also just sitting at one of the little cafes sipping on espresso (Albania has fantastic espresso everywhere) and watching the early evening parade of people stroll is satisfying.

Berat is a mellow city in the southern central part of Albania. There isn't a lot to do, per say, but it's a great cultural experience to visit for that exact reason. The people are just Albanians doing their thing, although everyone was exceedingly nice and took time out from whatever they were doing to talk to us. The outdoor market was one of my favorite things to visit, and there is a surprising variety of restaurants throughout the town. If you're in Albania anyway, you might as well check out Berat!
