Saranda lies on the Albanian mainland opposite the Greek island of Corfu. Ferry links connect the two countries, and there are a few ferries per day with different companies, both Albanian and Greek. We travelled with Ionian Ferries, who have an office in Corfu. Saranda town itself has a sheltered bay for swimming.
I didn't have to many expectations about Sarande so when I arrived I was pleasantly surprised. For a coastal resort city it is very pleasant. When I visited it was the shoulder season and there were few tourists and I stopped to chat with some local fisherman.
With a population of 30,000 this is the largest city on the Albanian Riviera. I found the town a little overbuilt with high-rises, several looking unfinished for good. I also was discouraged with the lack of good restaurants. It is a good base (really only base) for exploring Butrint which is a must. But I encourage one to go up the coast to the smaller more scenic Himare.
bigger city in the south of Albania, lots of hotels and shops, locals said it is ok to camp near the beach, the campground writen in some guidebooks dosen't exist. Butrint the ilyrian-roman ruinsite is not far
