Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is a unique city situated along the southwestern slope of the volcano Pichincha in the Andes mountain chain. Though the city is close to the equator, the weather here is cool and comfortable due to its high elevation.
Quito boasts a very old historic center and accordingly was one of the very first locations to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Churches, palaces and plazas abound, dazzling the eye with intricately decorated architectural features and richly furnished interiors. The surrounding parks host bustling markets and outdoor activities such as biking, jogging and hiking. Try a ride on the TelefériQo, an elevated tramway, to get a bird’s-eye view of Quito and experience the novelty of the incredibly high altitudes of Cruz Loma. Quito was on my bucket list since the time I saw photos of Quito Old Town and its architecture. I got to visit for the first time this past May 2016 and loved it.
Quito is surprisingly cool for being right one the ecuador. It is so high in the mountains those flying in are at risk of developing altitude sickness which keeps the weather very temperate. Nice city but not really a standout place just on a short stay.
