From the news, you would think that Saint-Denis is a wasteland of ghettos that is unwelcoming to visitors. In contrast, Saint-Denis is a culturally rich melting pot of people from the Middle East and Africa that actually feels a bit suburban and boring. Worth a visit just to get a better sense of the diversity of Paris and to break with the stereotypes portrayed by the media. Sunday is a great day to visit and see the market and tour the town's impressive basilica.
St. Denis was once a historic town, now it looks like a mishmash of architectural styles and has some less savory populations dwelling about. As a day trip from Paris it's a great idea, especially because the church at St Denis is quite a treat, but I'd recommend not staying here at night.
