Tubingen shouldn't be a stop for a short vacation, but can be great for a glimpse into everyday Germany. I stayed here in 2001 with some locals we met in a hostel in Amsterdam. There were a couple highlights from the area: -Cycling in Naturpark Schönbuch was a perfect way to see an old German forest. It's a very large reserve speckled with historic artifacts. You might find a monument tucked into a small grove or ancient wagon tracks carved into the rocks when the Romans were last there. While taking a break, we were able to enjoy a glass of Radler from a snack stand. If you haven't had it, it's a beer mixed with soda or lemonade. Ours was half lemonade and perfect for slaking the thirst our biking built up. The park is surrounded by several historic towns with lots of medieval architecture and history. It's great for a day of wandering and picture taking. -Chopping wood in an old orchard is how we returned the favor to our host for the stay. His mother still heated her home with firewood and fall was starting. Between loading freshly cut logs into the wagon we'd take breaks with giant pretzels and mineral water, which suddenly tastes great when you're thirsty. While it was hard work, it was one of my favorite days in Germany. It didn't hurt that the afterparty included onion cake. If you want to get into a culture this way, be sure to be extra social at hostels and let friends back home know you're traveling. We would meet back up with other travelers we met along our trip and we were also connected with several friends of friends from the States. Several times these friends were other Americans who had moved abroad and were happy to have any company from back home.
