Major Guatemalan tourist destination on Lake Atitlan. It is definitely worth a visit. The lake is beautiful. The town itself is nothing special, and is mostly geared towards tourists to the Lake. Having said that there are plenty of hostels and hotels and it makes a decent base for further exploration of the region.
spot to take the boat to cross the lake, lots of bars and restaurants, lot of tourists, called also Gringotenango
Panajachel is the gringo gateway to Guatemala's most stunning natural attraction - Lake Atitlan. A spring fed crater-lake ringed by jungle covered volcanos, the setting is best described as primeval. All that's missing is a lake monster and/or a pterodactyl to complete the scene (although it's rumored that there's one of the former). To see the latter, a good dose of the local floral hallucinogen should do the trick. If you're so inclined, San Pedro de la Laguna (just across the lake from Panajachel) is a good hippy hangout to start just such a Castaneda-ish journey.
The gateway city to the lake, a transport hub with plenty of restaurants and hotels to spend a night before delving deeper into the towns around the lake.
