I spent more than two and a half months in Indonesia, and the big island of Sulawesi, looking like a gigantic starfish being blown eastward in the wind, remains the absolute highlight. With amazing diving and snorkelling in Bunaken and the Togean Islands, and fantastic culture and scenery in Tana Toraja, you'll get far more out of a visit here than you will pushing thru the tourist mill in Bali or Lombok. Better still, there's very little of the greed and fake friendliness you find in the more touristed parts of Indonesia. People tend towards genuine kindness, and are overwhelmingly welcoming to visitors -- a nice change after a few weeks in Bali.
Secluded islands of the Togeans offer clear water and still diverse diving. The people of Tana toraja offer a glimpse of an ancient and strong culture amidst beautiful landscape.
Togian island are the BEST..?? but also Tanatoraja..
Burial rituals far different than what we know! Very cool.
