Referred to as Capital of the Negev, Beersheba is the largest city in southern Israel and the 7th largest city in Israel. Unlike other large cities in Israel, Beersheba is spread out over a lot of land. You can reach Beersheva from central Israel by train, or from just about anywhere in Israel by bus. The city has different parts that make up its culture, including a large student population attending Ben Gurion University (BGU), the Old City, modern shopping areas (they just built the largest mall in Israel here about a year ago called the Grand Canyon), "neighborhood" shopping areas, and newer surrounding suburbs. There are plenty of things to do in Beersheba, but it is not a tourist-friendly city. If you want to visit, your best bet is to get in touch with someone who is living in the area (such as a student, traveler, etc) who can recommend places to go and mention events going on that week, where to eat and when it's least crowded, and how to get around. There are instructions in some places, but they're not always very accurate or updated. It's a rapidly developing city with one foot in the old and one foot in the new. Embrace this when you get the chance to visit. Also, if you're looking to get out into nature and take a hike in the Negev (desert), Beersheva is a great launching point. As a central city, the buses (from Central Bus Station) can take you to just about wherever you want to get to in the Negev. You can even start your hikes or mountain biking trips right from the edge of the city itself.
