Famous for its mosaics Ravenna is also the site of eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its a wonderful place to simply start walking, enjoy the sites and see where you end up.
Ravenna was once the capital of the Roman Empire, after Rome collapsed. When the barbarians sacked the empire, Ravenna was not spared. However, in the 6th century Ravenna made a comeback, after the barbarian onslaught had subsided. As a result, Ravenna once again became the preeminent city in the Empire.
The former capital of the Western Roman Empire, Ravenna is rich with Byzantine influences, gifts from its eastern neighbors. Unfortunately, the Empire soon collapsed to the barbarian invaders. Today, Ravenna is perhaps the most grand and historic of the towns in its vicinity in Romagna. Great restaurants and shops fill the numerous little streets. It retains much of its medieval feel, making it a city entirely beautiful.
Had my all-time favorite meal in Ravenna. It was so good I've never forgotten it! It included homemade pasta, bread, wine, and cheese...
