If you head south, and want to visit onsen (hot spring) town, Beppu is the best place. The whole town smells like egg, which is a good sign for the hot spring town. Though, it can be tricky to navigate since the town is old and streets are small and curvy. I got super lost when I Was there, barely made it out. But if you know where to take the bus, it will be okay. Natural hot sprint water feels amazing.

Beppu is Japan's hot springs capital. On the northeast shore of Kyushu, hot water, mud and gasses bubble out from the earth. There are onsen (mineral baths) here for everyone: mud, sand, and water. Also be sure to search out the natural onsen on the hillside above Beppu. Nice city to stop in for a couple days on a tour around Kyushu.

This town in southern Japan is full of steaming hot springs, and the perfect place to totally unwind, relax and experience some of real Japan. Upon your arrival head to the information center a few blocks from the train station for a map of all the spas. Then spend the day hot spring hopping...I averaged about three spas a day. In the evening wander the tiny winding streets and duck into a curry house for dinner.
