Morioka is a "small" city, at least by Japanese standards, of about 300,000. It's very managable on foot or bike, and has a lot of history to offer. The rock splitting cherry tree and Iwate Park are some of the classic attaractions in town, but there's much more than that to do. Take a walk along the river, visit one of the sembei shops, check out the ironware or just wander. It's a good base for visits to the beach at Miyako and especially handy for visiting Mount Iwate, which looms over the city on a clear day. Near Lake Tazawako you'll find Nyuto Onsen just over the border into the next prefecture, which is a great place to visit, especially in winter. Koiwai is a very nice farm, and the ski area Appi is near it.
Great jumping off point for many excursions
so beatiful city
