Like Sigulda, Cēsis is a quaint town located on the Gauja River. Although Sigulda may have more castles, Cēsis has romantic cobblestoned streets and plenty of picturesque buildings that look lovely in the snow. Throw in some nice places to ski (or hike in the summer) and you’ll understand why this part of the Vidzeme region is so popular. My favorite part was exploring the medieval castle in Cēsis in the snow. It’s Latvia’s best preserved castle. In the castle grounds I found something unexpected: a statue of Lenin lying in a coffin.
