La Laguna de Siete Colores is just that - a lagoon of seven colors of blue mixed together as only Mother Nature can do - simply stunning. The town itself is practically undeveloped, just a few little guest houses here and there, and that's part of its charm - a rare Mexican beauty that hasn't even realized just how gorgeous she is.

This is one of the strange treats of the Yucatan, and hardly anyone goes there because most people head straight to the Caribbean beaches. This lake is inland just a little bit, and if you drive by and see it from the highway, you think you're seeing the sea--it's so crystal-clear and blue-green. But it's freshwater, and a haven for lots of interesting wildlife. There's a little bit of a post-Tulum hippie scene in the main village on the lake, but most of the tourists here are Mexican--it's a weekend hangout for people who live in Chetumal, down the highway. So you get beautiful water and a very local vibe.

We Loved Laguna Bacalar. It is far enough south that most tourists don't venture in so you need to be brushed up on your spanish. Although there is a contingent of ex-pats that call this place their second come. If possible check out Siete Colores a "lagoon" that literally (some say magically) changes colors through out the day with multiple shades of blues and greens...really stunning.
