Nyaung U is perhaps better known for its airport of the same name rather than the town itself, a small area that is mostly passed through or used as a stopover by tourists on their way to nearby Bagan. Nyaung U does get some visitation to its various pagodas, however, ornate Buddhist temples that were in some cases constructed almost a thousand years ago.
Bargain hunters who like to visit Bagan are no doubt more familiar with the town, however, as it offers many more lodging options than Bagan does and usually at much better prices. While the centrally located hotels in Bagan often charge $100 USD or more per night, Nyaung U has many hotels and motels with private rooms that go for as little as $20 USD per night. The trip to Bagan from here is also very short, a drive of only about 15 to 20 minutes depending on where you are staying.
The high season from travel in the region is from October to February, when the weather is cool and dry. March to May is a hotter shoulder season before the weather gets stiflingly hot and wet from June to September.
The absolute busiest time in Bagan is from mid-December to mid-January. Expect the highest hotel rates during this period. "Highest" is relative to what's normal in the area, however; you can still probably find perfectly decent lodging for well under $50 USD per night during peak season, especially if you are able to book a few weeks in advance.
Major annual festivals and celebrations in Nyaung U and Bagan include the Ananda Temple Festival in January, the Thingyang festival in April, the Manuha Pagoda Festival & Holy Man Festival at the end of September, the Festival of Lights in late October, and the Shwezigon Festival that runs from late November into mid-December.
Most of Nyaung U's hotels are clustered along Anawhrata Road and the parallel Lanmadaw Road running near the water. It's easy to find bargain prices within sight and walking distance of the Irrawaddy River.
The Wetkyi In area is the closest to Bagan that still has bargain hotel pricing. Hotels in this area include the Bagan Umbra, the Bagan May, the New Wave Guest House and the Bagan Princess Hotel.
Though they cost significantly more, rooms in the Old Bagan area are also generally more spacious and luxurious than what you'll find throughout Nyaung U. The highest-end options in this area include the Tharabar Gate Hotel, the Aye Yar River View Resort, and the Bagan Thande Hotel.
You can also find some nicer rooms to the south in the New Bagan area. These include the Myanmar Treasure Resort, the Areindmar Hotel, the Shwe Ye Pwint Hotel and the My Bagan Residence.
Nyaung U is filled with bargains just about every night of the year, at least from an international travel perspective. Budget options that are right near the airport include the Ever New Guest House and the Green Land Motel. Traveling north just a bit from the airport opens up dozens of new possibilities at anywhere from $15-40 USD per night.
You can also find many similar types of places with similar pricing in the New Bagan area, just to the southeast of Nyaung U and the south of Old Bagan.
