This beautiful town in the hills west of Lisbon makes for an easy day trip from the capital. Catch a train from Lisbon's Rossio station and 40 minutes later you can be in Sintra. Sintra has a lot to offer and it's somewhere I'd like to head back to again to explore further. There are a few accommodation options in the town if you want to stay longer than a daytrip allows (recommended).

Give yourself the whole day to experience this amazing city. From the cozy village where you can get an inexpensive authentic Portuguese meal to the breathtaking views at the top of a Medieval Moorish castle at the top of a mountain you will not be disappointed ... the palace and the ruins are not to be missed!

Fantastic place for anyone and everyone and just a short train ride from downtown Lisbon. There are five palaces, gardens, castles dotted around the town and the best way to see them is to buy a combination ticket that gives entry to all. If you don't have time for them all I would do Castelos dos Mouros, Pena Palace and Quinta de Regaleira. I would avoid if you have small kids as there is a lot of walking involved.
