Inta is a small coal mining town located in the northeast Komi Republic of Russia. It sits 994 miles north of Moscow and lies west of the Ural Mountains, on the banks of the River Bolshaya Inta. The town is home to the Museum of Local Lore, featuring the history of the indigenous Finno-Ugric tribes, natural resources, and fauna of the Komi Republic. Within the Komi Republic are many natural attractions to visit, such as Verkhniye Vorota on the Bolshaya Synya River and caves up the mouth of the Unya River. Use Skyscanner to help you rent a car in Inta to travel around the Komi Republic./pInta was once a Soviet forced labor camp of the Gulag for political dissidents, convicts sentenced to more than three years of prison time, prisoners of war, and Polish nationalists. The winters in Inta are long and severe with steady snow, while the summers are short. Choose the time to travel there wisely, keeping these seasonal changes in mind. Inta is also a great spot to have a rest after a journey to the Ural Mountains.
The historical section of Inta is called the Old City, and it was constructed of two-story wooden houses in the 1950s. A symbol of the Republic's coat of arms was placed on the town's famous water tower, which now serves as a museum building. Swedish political prisoner Artur Tamvelius designed it.
