I honestly can't say why I like Piran as much as I do. Once a part of the erstwhile Venetian Empire, this Slovenian coastal city on the Adriatic feels a bit like a tiny slice of Venice itself, minus the canals -- the twisty stone alleyways, the closeness to the sea. And yet though nothing, but nothing, can hold a candle to the magic that is Venice itself, Piran still manages to charm, perhaps by feeling much more local than touristic. Climb the rickety staircase of the church belltower for a euro and look down at terracotta roofs of the medieval city, surrounded on three sides by the sea. Walk along the coastal promenade and have a quiet swim in the Adriatic. Mow down on gelato in the central Tartini Square, then pop into a bar-caffe for a beer with the locals.

Piran is cute but it's tiny, like really tiny, like I explored the whole thing in 90 minutes tiny. It was great for a short stop and if the weather was better, I certainly would have gone swimming but I wouldn't spend a lot of time here.

Situated along the Italian border (and formerly a part of Italy), Piran is a charming town situated along the azure Adriatic sea on the Istrian Peninsula. Its narrow Venetian-style cobblestone streets seem made for sauntering up and down and enjoying the usually sunny weather. There's a string of restaurants with ample outdoor seating serving the regional specialty, pasta with cream sauce and truffle mushrooms.
