Welcome to the Great White Shark capital of the world! Just a few miles south of Gansbaai, more than 50,000 cape fur seals inhabit the Dyer Islands, thus, Great White Sharks can be found here in abundance. June to September are the best months for viewing. A handful of companies take the bravest guests out to see the sharks feeding and breaching, and it's a show well-worth experiencing in person. Typical white shark experiences take 3-5 hours and are wholly dependent on weather, water conditions and the sharks themselves. They are wild animals, after all. You don't have to hop in a cage to enjoy the expedition either, as sharks make quite a showing above the surface for all those who want to stay on the boat.

There are few places in the world where you can experience the thrill of being in the water with Great White sharks. I don't think that there is anywhere in the world where you can do it with as experienced crew, as high a chance of success of seeing sharks, and for as little money than you can in South Africa. It sounds terrifying but it is one of the coolest things you'll ever do. Plus, when you're in the water with what most people regard as monsters, you see them in a different light. You gain a whole new respect and appreciation for these animals. The experience leaves you pumped full of adrenaline but also full of awe. (Plus, people tend to look at you in awe when you tell them you've been shark diving. It's kinda cool.) I have been out on 4 shark dives. My first was in California where I paid $800, had to rent my own gear, and saw absolutely nothing. The other times were in South Africa. There, a half day of shark diving (including wetsuit, mask, towel, breakfast, lunch, transportation, and sea-sickness tablets if you need them) was under $200. My first time out, I saw 8 different sharks and got in the water with them 3 times. I have gone out with Brian McFarlane's operation (www.sharkcagediving.net/brian-mcfarlane/index.html) and I highly recommend them. There are several other companies out there though and I have yet to hear any first-hand negative feedback about any of them.

Gansbaai in two activities - Great White Shark Diving & Whale Watching. Amazing place to do these often once in a lifetime pursuits. Thrilling, exciting, terrifying cage diving or laid back, relaxed whale watching, you'll be left in a state of awe whichever you choose!

Do the cage, hope for high waves so the other 14 brave people are hanging over the edge of the ship and you can stay down with the big whites for 2 hours! Make sure the washingmachine doesn't centrifuge your limbs outside the cage. Enjoy the beautiful animals who come 20cm close out of pure curiosity. A nice change of scenery for Jaws, from the 10.000 seal colony on Dyer island.
