Jeju Island serves as a major resort some 50 million Koreans and lots of Chinese. It has an extraordinary number of hokey attractions that don't belong there. But besides this, there are several reasons to visit Jeju. I do my best to avoid excessively touristy places but have visited Jeju on four occasions. There are lots of natural attractions on the island, starting with the beautiful, and at places overdeveloped, coastline. There is a several-day walking course that rings the island. Next is Hallasan (Halla Mountain) which actually is the island. A national park occupies the center of the island, including the mountain, with several hiking trails. In addition, there are orem, or small volcanic hills, all over the island. Finally, Jeju has some of the best and biggest examples of lava tubes in the whole world. Oh, and the seafood and pork here is outstanding.
Besides all the 'World 7 natural wonder' list, Jeju island is worth visiting if you are in Korea. The island used to be a different country in the old days. They have their unique culture, language and cuisine.
I went on a tour that was booked in the States before I took off for Korea. Unfortunately it will all be in Korean, so it will be difficult for non-Korean speakers, even communicating with the driver/guide. My dad booked the tour, so I have no clue who it's through. We took a flight from Gimpo airport in Seoul (which used to be the main airport in South Korea before the Incheon airport was opened) to Jeju City. It was about 2 hours. We met our driver (not really a guide as he pointed out) and the rest of our tour of fellow Koreans (all from the US, mostly from LA). We were in a minibus/van thing and over the course of a few days we were taken around the island to visit various tourist hotspots and businesses. It is quite a beautiful island that is very much a tourist trap. We stayed at the Lotte Hotel and there was a *very* small casino in the building (with ads all over the island and airport with Robert De Niro's face all over it. The Hotel itself is a very high end hotel, but it was part of our package. There was also a whole floor of just duty free shops as well as a full Louis Vuitton store inside. The views from the Hotel grounds were also quite amazing. My brother mentioned the last time our family was there ( I did not get to join my family the last time) they had a room that faced the ocean so the views just from the room were pretty great. I'm sure if I was there for a longer time I would have seen more of the island, but you know when you are on a tour, you are on their schedule.
Nice get away location in southern Korea. The weather remains relatively moderate even in winter.
