After Girona (which I see another person already recommended, so I'm not going to write about it), a very nice city to visit is Tarragona. It was the capital city of this area during Ancient Roman times. You can still visit its amphitheatre, the remains of the circus, the walls of the city, and visit the Medieval cathedral and towers. In general, it's a nice city to go on a day trip, and you can get there easily from Barcelona by train. It's not as touristy as other places in the Catalan coast and has a very nice ambient with little restaurant terraces and such. If you go to Tarragona, you should definitely check if they do a castellers (traditional Catalan human castles) exhibition. They often to them in front of the city's cathedral, which contributes to make it especially pretty.

Lovely seaside town with beautiful beaches around (not the one in town but North of it there are several beautiful beaches, busy or more quiet - considering you are going to Spain in summer: you won't be alone!). I went there in 2003 and had a great time. You can also check the Roman theater, the museum, and go see human towers (the local tradition).

Tarragona was a lovely mix of Spanish & Italian charm. We stayed here for two days, but I wish it were longer!
