Negombo is a small fishing town near the Colombo Airport. It is closer to the Airport than Colombo, cheaper and quiter. That makes it popular among tourists who want to rest before or after the long flight. Few things that you can do there: 1. Visiting the fish market - The main fish market is located few kms south from the town and its an interesting place to visit. 2. Relaxing at the beach. 3. Drinking a tropical fruit shake at this nice family run business (Near the Negombo beach park) - They have the largest variety of fruits I've seen in Sri lanka.
With its long stretch of beach, European history and close proximity to the airport you would think Negombo has a lot to offer tourists on the fabulous island of Sri Lanka. Sadly it misses the mark a bit. The beach is not very clean, the German & British bars blight the main-drag and the nightlife can lean towards the seedier side at times. However, because it is so close to the airport it is a great option for a night or two before moving on to more authentic experiences. There are some lovely hotels outside the main precinct and the ones in Negombo itself are good value for money. I found a private driver in Negombo to take me around the North and Central parts of the island for 5 days, each day staying at a different town, and he was knowledgable on where to stay and eat. So while its not my favourite part of Sri Lanka, its a good place to start if you are travelling around the island independantly.
Negombo is a study in the fact that context is everything. No better than middling as a beach town, and with generally overpriced food, Negombo is wholly redeemed by its location just ten klicks from Colombo's international airport. And what a relief it is, arriving by air, or contemplating an early flight out, to know that you will be spending the night not in the congested tangle of Colombo, but seaside, with German package tourists and a passable prawn curry and a reasonably priced hotel with ocean breezes. Is Negombo historic? Probably. Does it have churches and minor sights aplenty? Almost certainly. But who cares? Grab a cold one and shake off that jet-lag: you've arrived.
