One of the most beautiful archaeological sites in Sri Lanka, it's nicely spread out but can be visited on bike. Having a guide helps understanding its value. Lots of local visitors.

Just slightly further north of Central Province, the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa was the royal capital of Sri Lanka in the 11th century AD but its origins could be traced even much earlier to 2nd century BC. The capital was strategically important to defend the kingdom of Anuradhapura from foreign invaders so much so it was known as the Fortress City. The site can be explored within 3 to 4 hours, if not, perhaps 5 hours. Visitors can rent a bicycle to explore the site.

The finest of the ancient Singhalese cities of the northern Sri Lankan plains, Polonnaruwa is the place that you should visit if you only have time to visit one set of ruins while you're here. Very extensive, but easily navigated by bicycle or hired car in the course of a single day, the ruins here are in better shape than those at Anuradhapura or Sigiriya, and lovely to explore. With a mixture of dagobas, Buddhist and Hindu temples, monastic ruins and crumbling halls, it's a gorgeous place rich in historical interest, and one of my favorite sites in Sri Lanka.
