Kirkwall is a tiny town, but nearby are the Scapa Flow Shipwrecks and the Highland Park Distillery. If you're looking for tasty pub food, give Helgi's in town a whirl.

The largest town and capital of Scotland's Orkney Islands, Kirkwall has many 17th & 18th century houses. We were here on a Sunday, so many businesses were closed (some opening later in the day). We heard a choir at St. Magnus Church, strolled the grounds of Earl's Palace, did some window shopping on Bridge Street, Albert Street & Broad Street and chatted with friendly locals at their popular Bowling Greens.

Off the beaten path, Kirkwall is the gateway into the Orkney Islands. It is quite and calm. Despite the sometimes poor weather, Kirkwall has a warm feeling to it, which is probably from the super friendly locals who are proud to show off their town.

The largest town in Orkney, where the ferries from Scotland, Shetland and elsewhere moor up. Streets of concrete and stone, build to endure and managing to look lovely in the process (in a rather severe way). Feels backwater-quiet when you first arrive on the way to the outer islands - feels startlingly urban when you get back from them. A truly remarkable history going back to the Norse period (and beyond). Where Ba' is played.
