This is a very fascinating and mysterious place. We arrived at the park at sunset and the tower turned from bright to reddish colours. It really looked like a devil creation. It was really impressive and worth the trip for a quick view. The surroundings are also a nice ride, and there are many savage animals all around ( we saw many pranghorns and deers)
A monumental close encounter of the coolest kind.... Fun and exciting to climb or just to watch others climb.
This is just amazing. Seems to rise out of the high desert. Unique rock formation that was the set for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Great for technical climbing.
Devil's Tower is the mountain made famous in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This national park was easily a day trip from Deadwood where I was staying and the drive in was as interesting as the park. As I neared the park, weaving in and out of canyons, the tower came into and left my view. There's a path the takes you around the tower, and you'll probably see groups of climbers trying to make it to the top. The usual spartan national park concessions are there, but mostly you're on your own. I was hoping to find the landing site for the UFOs in the movie, but that's not part of Devil's Tower apparently. There isn't some big flat unwooded area on the other side like in the movie.
