about 2:20 hours drive, could be a nice day trip (on the way stop in Stanford University). Also on the way stop in google, Linkedin, etc.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is the star of the show in Monterey. It gets quite packed in nice warm weather, so you're almost better off visiting this tiny town and aquarium off season when parking is better and lines are shorter.
Awesome place to check out if you're in the area! Lots of places to hike and explore. Their aquarium is a great area for the kids to learn about sea life and have fun.
I was surprised at how charmed I was by Monterey - this coastal town is somehow both big city and small town at the same time. (It lacks high-rises, but makes up for it in commuter traffic.) But the narrow roads, small shops, and bustling boardwalk and pier make it a fun, fascinating place for a stroll.
