New Haven is a bustling small city in Connecticut that’s well known for being the home of Yale University. People visit New Haven for its academic and startup scenes and tend not to venture out too far beyond their intended destination.
If you’re a foodie, you’ll also enjoy the city’s highly-rated ethnic restaurant scene concentrated around the New Haven Green. New Haven also boasts a small but busy theater scene, and some museums.
New Haven’s continental climate means that it experiences all four seasons, and tends to play to the extremes within those seasons like the rest of New England. You’ll need to plan to bring the right gear for the season.
New Haven’s proximity to New York City causes hotel prices to be a bit higher than one might expect. Additionally, there isn’t a large selection of hotels in New Haven, so rooms tend to be at a premium during the late summer when students are returning to the universities.
In general, you’ll be able to find a hotel room in New Haven for between $150 and $200. If you’re willing to go farther out of the city—and away from New York City—you might be able to find the occasional cheaper option, but Connecticut as a whole tends to be fairly expensive.
Your hotel in New Haven probably won’t have extensive amenities like pools, gyms, or spas. Furthermore, your hotel in New Haven may not necessarily be in a safe part of town, so consider using a car to get around even if your destination seems like it’s nearby.
Hotels in New Haven usually offer special rates if you’re affiliated with one of the city’s academic institutions—especially Yale. You may also have access to certain resources that other travelers wouldn’t have.
Most of the hotels in New Haven are located in the center of the city and just south of the Yale University campus. There are also a couple of hotels in the Long Wharf neighborhood, and a couple more farther to the north.
For most purposes, the hotels in the center of the city will be the best value, so pick accordingly. Use our expertise here at Skyscanner to help you find the best possible deal for when you travel to New Haven.
New Haven is great! Go have a pie at Frank Pepe's or BAR pizza. At bar you want the white mashed potato pizza with bacon......delicious!!
What's not to love about this city? I've been coming here for years, and finally got the chance to move here a month ago. I have been looking for a place accepting of myself and my partner as members of the transgender community, and this place is perfect. There's a lot to do here as well, from restaurants and bars to museums and concert halls. I am in love with this place. I'm so glad I finally live here.
New Haven is a surprisingly hip town. On Connecticut's shoreline, it is, in my humble opinion, the best place in the state to get a hit of current culture. Wander through Yale University, eat some veggie food at Claire's Cornercopia, and maybe catch a show at the Shubert, Palace, or another club.
Visiting the city is wonderful. Park at our rr station and take the train in. Yale University hosts tours, see the theaters, restaurants, shops, galleries, especially newly restored Yale Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art.
