Peak and Low Seasons in Chiang Mai

Though Chiang Mai is considered a quieter and more relaxed alternative to places like Bangkok, it's still primarily a popular tourist and shopping destination, and as such you can generally expect passenger traffic (and fares) to be higher on the weekend.

Early February to mid-April is a low period during which fares will probably be at their lowest. Unfortunately, the reason for this is that it is the rice field burning season, during which the city usually experiences high levels of air pollution.

The busiest season starts on the first of November and runs right up to when the rice fields start burning in February, the time of year when the weather is most pleasant. Fares will generally be at their highest during this period. They pick up again for a bit in April once the smoke has cleared out and the annual Songkran festival begins, but are generally down during monsoon season from May to November. There may be a spike in August as there is an influx of European tourists on summer holiday, however. September is likely to have the lowest fares of the year outside of burning season as it rains almost every day.
