A flight from Jeju to Seoul will most likely take you from South Korea's second-busiest airport to its busiest. That can mean heavy crowds and traffic at times, but also lots of daily flight options and good competition between carriers. Departure times are available from early morning to late evening most days, and lots of different carriers offer a direct flight (which lasts a little over an hour). Your options include Asiana Airlines, Korean Air, Jeju Air, Jin Air and Eastar Jet among others. The highly competitive fares on this route often mean a flight is cheaper than taking a ferry!
Facilities at Incheon International Airport
Incheon has the facilities and amenities you would expect of a major world-class airport. You'll find a transit hotel that lets you rent rooms for six hours at a time, shower facilities that are free to passengers in transit, free nap chairs, a business center, and a children's playroom among other useful amenities. There's even an ice skating rink, a movie theater and a driving range on site. You'll soon see why many international travelers cite Incheon as their favorite airport for a layover!
You'll also find a wide range of dining options. Burgers, pastries, chicken, tacos, fine dining and of course Korean cuisine are all available. Chains familiar to Americans that have a presence at the airport include Burger King, Taco Bell, Quiznos and KFC.
If you need to rent a vehicle at the airport, a number of major chains such as Avis, Sixt and Europcar are available. Incheon International is located on an island just to the west of the city of Incheon, which in turn is a little southwest of Seoul. Depending on traffic, plan for about a 20 to 30 minute drive to Incheon and an additional 20 to 30 minutes to get to Seoul.
As far as public transit goes, there is a rail line that runs directly from the airport to Seoul. You can choose between an express line that runs non-stop from the airport to Seoul (and is slightly more expensive), or a slightly slower line that makes about a dozen stops en route. Both train lines are out of commission overnight, but during the late hours a bus replaces them and hits the rail line stops.
Things to Do Near Incheon International Airport
As mentioned, Incheon is on an island, so a bit of traveling is involved to get to anything "near" the airport. However, the airport is so well-supplied with amenities that many travelers simply opt to spend their whole layover there.
If you're staying near the airport and looking for things to do, some areas that are popular with tourists include the Gangnam District, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, the Namdaemun market and the gigantic underground mall called COEX. A number of free guided tours are also available that depart from and return to Incheon International and take you all around the Seoul area.
Hints and Tips for Incheon International Airport
Free WiFi is available throughout all of the passenger terminals and gates, and also near the various Cafe Bene locations. If you plan to make use of the Terminal Hotel, keep in mind that you cannot check in without a ticket showing you are currently in transit, and the hotel does not offer any kind of early check-in option.
