If you're headed from Newark Liberty Airport to Mumbai, you'll almost certainly be going to Chhatrapati Shivaji International (India's second-busiest airport). Many different daily flights are available, but if you're looking for nonstop service, you'll want to look to United or Air India. A direct flight will take you about 15 hours. There are many other options out of Newark Liberty that have one stop along the way, but the length of time of the layover can vary greatly. The best of these only add a couple hours to the trip, but some will add ten hours or more! It's important to shop around and carefully compare these trips as the flights with the longer stopovers generally don't save you any money.
Facilities at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport
Mumbai's major commercial airport is located near the center of the city. The city is located on a peninsula with Navi Mumbai across the water about 30 minutes to the east, and the city of Thane about 24 minutes to the northeast (under ideal traffic conditions). There isn't a rail stop at the airport, but there are a variety of buses that make the short trip to the nearby stations of Vile Parle and Andheri, from which you can ride into the center of Mumbai. You'll also find rail lines to Navi Mumbai and Thane as well as many other stops in the area.
Of course, since this is a major international airport, there are a number of car rental agencies available. These are mostly local and regional chains such as United Car Rental Agency and Carjee Car Rentals. If you prefer major international chains you will find some (such as Avis) in the city.
Chhatrapati Shivaji International also has a wide range of amenities. You'll find prayer rooms, indoor smoking rooms, ATMs and free WiFi throughout the airport among other benefits. If you have a little time to spend at the airport, you might want to check out the Jaya He Gvk New Museum, which actually spans the walls of the arrival corridors.
